Malaria is a parasitic infection transmitted to humans through infected mosquito bites. People with malaria feel very sick, with a high fever, shaking chills, and episodes of perspiration. Malaria is uncommon in temperate climates, but it is still common in tropical and subtropical nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been trying to reduce the incidence and prevalence of malaria by promoting precautionary measures, such as distributing bed nets that help prevent mosquito bites. If you are supposed to travel to locations where malaria is endemic, take preventive steps to stay away from mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing, sleeping under bed nets, and using insect repellants.
The most common malarial drugs include artemisinin-based combination therapies, aka ACTs, such as artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine. ACTs are a combination of two or more drugs, which work against the malaria parasite. Other widely used malaria drugs include chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which work by preventing the parasite from entering the red blood cells, which is why they are used for the prevention of malaria. Other drugs include Malarone, Qualaquin, doxycycline, Mefloquine, and Primaquine.
